BetterSleep

GROWTH SQUAD DESIGN LEAD · 2026

Research, onboarding, and the in-between states of a top-grossing sleep app.

PROBLEM

People liked BetterSleep and didn't come back the next night. I ran a diary study to find out why, turned it into the quarter's roadmap, and designed the entry points, copy, and loading states that came out of it.

BETTERSLEEP — RESEARCH TO ROADMAP

A returning problem, not a value problem.

People liked what they got; the app gave them no reason to come back the next night. Four focus areas came out of it, each tagged by confidence. That became the quarter's experimentation roadmap.

BETTERSLEEP — LOADING AND EDGE STATES

Where trust is won or lost

The syncing sequence is where trust is won or lost. Progress is honest, the wait is explained, and a 20-second fallback makes sure nobody is left staring at a spinner.

Home screen syncing sleep data, with the copy "This usually takes under a minute. Hang tight."The same sync state further along, now reading "Almost there… we're finalizing your insights."The sync resolving to a check mark and "Success!", with the rest of the home screen ready behind it.
BETTERSLEEP — RANGE

Higher stakes, same voice

A care pathway to specialists and at-home diagnostics, with higher stakes and legally careful copy that still sounds like the app. Partner features designed to feel useful instead of like an ad. And the Insights tracker: sleep quality, phases, interruptions, sounds.
